Thoughts Become Things: How to Train Your Mind to Work For You, Not Against You
You’ve probably heard it before: “Thoughts become things.”
But here’s the part most people skip over—your thoughts aren’t just passing ideas in your head. They create the lens you see life through, they influence how your body feels, and they magnetize more of the same into your reality.
Think about it…
If you wake up and say to yourself, “Ugh, this is going to be a terrible day,” what usually happens? You start noticing every single thing that goes wrong—and your mood follows.
But if you catch yourself and say, “Hold up. I get to choose how today goes. I’m making it a great one,” your body relaxes, your energy shifts, and life starts handing you better moments.
That’s not “woo”—that’s your nervous system, focus, and energy lining up.
The key? You don’t have to control every thought you have (you can’t), but you can learn to notice them, shift them, and choose the ones that serve you.
How to Start Thinking in the Direction You Want Your Life to Go
1. Get Clear on What You Want
Pick one area of your life—relationships, career, health—and write it out in two columns:
- Left column: How it is now.
- Right column: How you want it to be.
Example:
Left: My spouse and I are always fighting. I sometimes don’t want to be around them.
Right: We get along beautifully. Our relationship is full of love, trust, and respect. I love spending time together.
Take what you wrote in the right column, put it on an index card as if it’s already happening, and keep it somewhere visible. Anytime a negative thought creeps in, replace it with that statement.
2. Stay in the Now
The more you’re in the present moment, the easier it is to steer your thoughts. When you’re stuck in the past, your mind tends to rehash old patterns.
Try mini “now breaks” throughout your day: unplug from your phone, sit somewhere you love (maybe it’s your porch or a sunny corner), read something uplifting, journal, or just breathe. You’ll feel more grounded and inspired.
3. Journal With Intention
Each morning, jot down how you want your day to go. If you’ve got a presentation, write:
“I’m so grateful my presentation flows effortlessly, and my audience is engaged and inspired.”
Then visualize it as if it already happened. Add gratitude to the mix—it’s the fastest way to keep fear from taking over.
4. Control Your Mind Before It Controls You
Think of yourself as a magnet—whatever thoughts you send out will come back. Keep an affirmation or goal on a card and repeat it anytime a limiting belief shows up.
Example:
“I am so happy and grateful now that my business generates $___ a week and continues to grow.”
This isn’t just positive thinking—it’s mental reprogramming.
5. Get Into the Feeling
This is where most people miss the magic. Thinking the thought is step one, but you’ve got to feel it as if it’s already yours.
Want a new car? Go test-drive it. Want a new home? Walk through open houses. Your subconscious can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality—so why not use that to your advantage?
The Untangled Truth
Changing your thoughts isn’t about being “perfectly positive” all the time. It’s about building a habit of catching yourself, shifting your focus, and choosing the story you want to live.
Even if you veer off track, you’re always just one thought away from getting back on course.
And just like feeding your body with healthy food, feeding your mind with healthy thoughts is a daily practice. Some days you’ll nail it. Other days you’ll need to reset. Either way—you’re in the driver’s seat.
